Fun Plumbing Facts

Fun Plumbing Facts

Sometimes it’s nice to step back from the serious side of plumbing and just have a little fun!  Here are some interesting plumbing facts to start your week off right!

  • The bathroom has had numerous names in different parts of the world.  The Egyptians called it the House of Horror, and the Romans referred to it as the Necessarium.  The Tudors used the privy.  The French called it “La Chambre Sent, which translates to “the smelly house.”
  • Some places in Japan have voice-activated urinals that respond to several commands, including “fire.”
  • You know that age-old debate about which way is the correct way to put toilet paper on the holder?  A $100,000 study was done to settle it for good:   three out of four people have the flap in the front.
  • 90% of pharmaceuticals are not absorbed by the body and wind up in the sewer system.  Trace amounts of estrogen, cholesterol-lowering drugs, pain relievers, antibiotics, caffeine, and even anti-depressants have made their way into natural bodies of water and have been found in fish.
  • London’s Crystal Palace premiered the first public toilets in 1851.  These were “pay toilets,” requiring a penny for their use. “To spend a penny” became English slang for using the toilet.
  • 25% of households in America still lacked indoor toilets as recently as 1950.  Most of these were in rural areas, and in the South the statistic was closer to 50%.
  • Al Moen invented the single-handle faucet in 1939.  It’s the familiar faucet you may find in your home today that can control hot and cold water in just one turn.
  • Ever wonder why manhole covers are circular?  If they’re turned on their side, they can’t fall through their own opening.
